Jim Briles, Officer of the Year in Asheboro!

ASHEBORO-Asheboro Police Detective James Rex "Jim" Briles has been selected as the 2013 Asheboro Police Officer of the Year. Briles has been a member of APD since 1999 serving in patrol, Criminal Investigations, Vice/Narcotics and again in CID/CSI. He is son of James Rex and Catherine Cameron Briles. Det. Briles is a license pilot and enjoys riding his motorcycle. He is also the brother of R. Trent Briles, Curator of the Briles Information Network. Congrats big brother on your award!

Mary Ann Elizabeth Schweitzer Briles, age 88, passed December 18, 2013 at the Christian Community Nursing Home in Hudson, Wisconsin. Funeral Mass 12pm (noon) Saturday, 12/21/13 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, River Falls. Visitation 10:30am until time of Mass at the church. Interment in St. Bridget Catholic Cemetery. Born May 13, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, to Henry and Eva (Walker) Schweitzer, Sr. the first of three children. She was married to the late Donald O. Briles on April 30, 1955. Survived by her daughters: Theresa “Terri” Briles of Shoreview, MN, Phyllis Briles (husband Keith Lammers) of Le Sueur, MN; grandchildren, Michael Aaron (Jennifer) Briles of Chicago, Melissa Briles of Oregon, WI, Joshua Briles of Baldwin, WI, great-grandson Oliver Edward Briles. She is also survived by her brother Michael (Lori) Schweitzer of Lakeville, MN; sister-in-law Delores Briles; many nieces and nephews and faithful friends, especially Joanie & David Soward. Bonnie Kay Snider Jones, 69, a resident of Duke St., died Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Rusty Sieck officiating. Interment will follow at the Snider Family Cemetery in Churchland, NC. Born on May 28, 1944 in Davidson County, NC to Virginia Briles Snider and the late Jesse Gray Snider. She was a bookkeeper for over 50 years and former vice president of the Davidson County Genealogical Society. On June 18, 1966, she married Jeremy Copeland (Jerry) Jones, who survives of the home; also surviving are two sons, Ben C. Jones of Lexington and James G. Jones of Thomasville; her mother, Virginia Briles Snider of Thomasville; daughter-in-law, Julie Jones of Winston-Salem; and twin granddaughters, Megan and Melissa Jones of Winston-Salem.

Max "Mick" S. Briles, 83, of Salem, Oregon passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 in Arizona. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon. Born on April 2, 1930 in Shelburn, Oregon to Dewey Briles and Bertha Leimkuhl. What a Season for Coach Art Briles & the Baylor Bears. 11-1 and now Big 12 Champs after convincing 30-10 win over the Texas Longhorns. Baylor fans were on pins and needles after Oklahoma St lost the bedlam game to Oklahoma. Baylor needed this victory to take the title and clinch a BCS bowl! Baylor is now Fiesta Bowl bound on New Year's Day in Glendale, AZ and will likely play the University of Central Florida! Good luck to Coach Briles and the Baylor Bears in the bowl game !!!

Edward Duane “Eddie” Briles resident of Haskell, Texas passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Haskell with Mr. John Greeson and Rev. Jim McCurley officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Cemetery. Visitation is planned for Saturday evening, November 30 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home located at 304 N. 2nd Street. Born March 6, 1954 at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA to Dennis Ray Briles and Wanda Nelle McCain Briles. He married Teresa Ann Rhoads on May 26, 1973 in Rule, Texas, preceded in death by his father, Dennis Ray Briles; mother, Wanda McCain Briles; grandparents, George Abe Briles and Irene Felton Briles, OJ McCain and Ada Belle Place McCain, W.O. (Bill) Kittley and Elsie (Tottie) McCain Kittley, father-in-law, Eugene Rhoads. Arthur Dale Loflin, who ties go back to Elizabeth Briles Laughlin (his great grandmother X2)got busted with the goods, which is valued at over $122,000! Loflin, 56, and Thea Gail Malicoat, 54, of 3664 Beckerdite Road, were both charged with two counts of trafficking in marijuana, maintaining a place for a controlled substance, conspiring to traffic in marijuana, three counts of simple possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing, selling or buy a gun with an altered serial number and possession of a firearm by a felon. Loflin and Bailcoat being held under $50,000 secured bonds, the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. Beta Testing for Radio Network Complete!

Beta testing for the Briles Information Radio Network is complete, which brings us to phase II of the project. Many thanks to SamVibe for the free service during the testing process. The beta testing consisted of a 24-hour loop of pre-recorded programming with no live content. We now move to the actual implementation of the radio station to allow for live broadcasting with a toll free line for requests and interviews, remote broadcasting, and SKYPE contact capabilities. Born March 26, 1926 in Guilford County she is a daughter of the late Alfred Levi McDowell and Mamie SIlman McDowell .She was married to Paul Thomas Cook who preceded her in death on February 23, 1986. Also preceding her in death are her parents and sisters Eloise Reid, Dorothy “Dot” McDonald and Betty Davis and brothers George McDowell, Riley McDowell and Reverend Garland McDowell. Survived by one son Gary Paul Cook and his wife Sherrie of Trinity and two wonderful grandchildren, Tyler Paul Cook and Travis Lee Cook whom she loved and cared for very much. Born April 10, 1938 in Randolph County she is a daughter of the late Kernie Routh and Bertie Hill Routh. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Donald Scism on August 13, 2004 and a sister Christine R. Jordan and a brother Gene Routh. Survived by one son David K. Scism and wife Ronda of Thomasville and a grandson Phillip Keith Scism of Thomasville. She is also survived by her siblings Anne Harrell, Carl E. Routh, Shirley R. Doris Juanita Austin, 90, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Wake: Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Thomasville Funeral Home. A Chapel Service will follow at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Jack Hurley, Jr. officiating: interment will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park in High Point. Born November 16, 1922 in Randolph County to the late Frank and Myrtle Rush Hunt. Preceded in death by her husband, Jack Austin; son, Henry Austin; daughter, Rhonda Austin. Survived by daughters, Sherri Webster, Dana McKitrick and Jackie Pryce; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Hilda Hill Briles, age 77, of Asheboro died Monday, May 13, 2013 at her home. Funeral services will follow on Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel Asheboro with Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.  Born in Randolph County to Blake and Margaret Hunt Hill. In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Harold Briles who passed on October 25, 2003; brother Roy Leon Hill and his wife Betty, and sister Golda Hill Stephens and her husband Bill. Survived by her daughter, Amy L. Briles of Asheboro; sister, Joyce Hill McGee and her husband James of Asheboro; brothers, Bobby Franklin Hill of Asheboro and Thomas Reid Hill and his wife Louise of Sophia.

Ernest Edwin Hoover Dies

Ernest Edwin Hoover, 89, a resident of Thomasville, passedThursday, April 25, 2013 in the Hospice Home at High Point. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 3 P.M. in Calvary United Church of Christ with Rev. Kelly Barefoot officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in the church cemetery. Born October 16, 1923 in Randolph County, a son of the late Jasper Andrew Hoover and Bertha Eagle Hoover. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Coman. On January 20, 1952 he was married to Helen Darr, who survives of the home. Also surviving are daughters, Anita H. Connell and husband Randy of Thomasville and Marcia H. Coatta and husband John of Minnetonka, Mn.; a son Ernie Hoover and wife Kim of Thomasville; adopted son, William “Boo” Gaddy of Thomasville;a sister, Pauline Clodfelter and husband James of Asheville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren, Jessica Connell, Sam Coatta, Trevor Connell, Ashley Hoover, Annie Coatta, Emily Hoover, Max Coatta and Brittany Hoover.

Born in Randolph County on January 2, 1938 to Roby and Alice Hoover Gallimore; preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Briles. Genevieve Laura Danz Hepler died on April 10, 2013 in Greensboro, NC. A graveside service will be held at Floral Garden Memorial Park on Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 pm. Born March 14, 1927 in Manor, Texas, the daughter of Felix and Ruby Danz. On October 21, 1944, she married Raymond Calvin Hepler Sr. and moved to High Point, NC. Survived by four children, Carol Dills and her husband Orville of Randleman, NC; Raymond Hepler Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of High Point, NC; Rebecca Apergis and her husband Steve of Burke, VA; and Elizabeth Rich of Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Theresa Rodriguez and husband Luis, Yvette Dills, Raymond Hepler III and wife Susie, Sarah Martin and husband Randy, Andrew Hepler and wife Genny, Jason Apergis and wife Catherine, Justin Apergis, and Kevin Rich and wife Lisa. She is also survived by her thirteen great-grandchildren: Karen Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Adam Rodriguez, Raymond Hepler IV (Cal), Ellie Hepler, Alex Martin, Jackson Martin, Oliver Hepler, Ethan Apergis, Caroline Apergis, Hailey Doan, Deven Tidwell, and Jonah Rich. She is also survived by her brothers Robert Danz and sisters Ruth Anderson and JoAnn Baldridge.

Raymond Calvin Hepler Sr. died in 1998 and is buried at Floral Garden. His mother, Gulie Hoover Hepler is buried at Back Creek Friends Cemetery in Asheboro, NC. Jason Vance Koontz passed April 4, 2013 in Davidson County. A Memorial and thanksgiving celebration of his life and spirit will be held Monday, April 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville with Dr. Ivan Peden and Rev. Peggy Finch officiating. Born May 27, 1971 in Alamance County Charlesanna and Ernest "Sonny" Koontz. Survived by his son, Zachary Koontz, by his parents Charlesanna and Sonny; his brother Rusty and wife Jill of Thomasville; and nephew Nycholas and nieces Reagan and Baylyn Koontz. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother Mary Parrish of Trinity.

Beatrice Lee Kennedy passed March 29, 2013.  Graveside service was March 29 at 4pm at Midway Baptist Church. Jamestown, NC. Born on August 31, 1930 to Jessie Lee Kennedy and Rosa Skeen Kennedy who preceded him in death. He was married to Alene McPeters Kennedy on May 2, 1952 who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters Toni Kennedy Davis (Paul) of Walburg ,NC and Tember Kennedy Blevins (Billy) of Asheboro, NC. . One son James Lee Kennedy of Trinity. He is survived by four grandsons James Michael Davis, Derrick Davis (Brittany), Zachary Blevins and B0 Blevins and two granddaughters Angel Byerly and Faith Blevins. He has five great-grandchildren. He also has two sisters Ida Mae Hill of Asheboro and Helen Freeman of Virginia. His brothers Sylvester, Charles, Wade and Robert Kennedy all preceded him in death. Daddy was a member of the Berean Baptist Church.

Mary (Mammy) Elizabeth Briles Watford, 96, passed Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 AM at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. John Hill officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 6 until 8 PM. Born in Davidson County, May 5, 1916 a daughter of Virgil S. Briles and Pansy Jordan Briles and was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. In 1941 she was married to Odell Jesse Watford who died in 1979. Surviving are two sons, Jesse Odell Watford and his wife Sherri and Eddie Briles Watford and his girlfriend Pam Jessup, both of Thomasville; two sisters, Dorothy Hunt and Virginia Snyder, both of Thomasville; five grandchildren, Tammy Blackburn and her husband Robert, Jesse O. Watford III, Julie Myers, Keith Watford, Megan Wood and her husband Travis, and Ashley Watford; fifteen great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Joe Watford, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Mathews, and a great-granddaughter, Katie Brown.

Muncie – Kindell “KW” Briles, 70, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Acadiana Management Group Specialty Hospital after a long illness. No formal services. Mr. Briles will be cremated. Born September 3, 1942 in Crawfordsville the son of the late Clarence and Pauline (Wade) Briles. Preceded in death by sons, Darryl, and Daniel; his sister, Clarice Jo Briles; and a brother-in-law Wayne Jennings. Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Juanita; three daughters, Bridget Gilley(husband, Daryl) of Bladenboro, NC, Rachel Smith (fiancée, Aaron Dixon) of Gaston, and Faye Jennings-Hannah (husband, Dennis) of Muncie; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Willmann (husband, Steve) of Muncie; a son-in-law, Dwayne Smith of Ash, NC; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Born September 12, 1927 in Guilford County, NC to the late Charles White and Bessie Hoover White. Rose and Mamie (Morris) Parrish. Clarence Wood, Son of Briles Passes

Clarence Wood, age 83, of Asheboro passed Thursday, February 7, 2013 at his home. Family will receive friends Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 11, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Tony Wood officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Native of Randolph County and a U.S. Army veteran; preceded in death by parents Numie & Ida Briles Wood and his sisters, Faye Byrum and Verlie Loflin. Survived by sons, Tony Wood and his wife Nanette of Asheboro, Tim Wood and his wife Lisa of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Julie and Jordan Wood of Asheboro, Justin and Brittany Wood of Franklin, TN; sister, Clara Loflin of Trinity; nephew, Randy Loflin and his wife Vivian of Trinity; nieces, Sherri Freeland and her husband Mike of Wilkesboro, Regina Poole and her husband Jackie of Denton.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Howard and Estelle Dennis; Kenneth and Margie Madden; and a cousin, Ernie. He is survived by parents, Jerry Dennis and Terri Briles; brother, Shawn Aubrey; sisters, Sherry Cox, Tish Frum, Amanda Jo Briles and Tammy Montgomery; the mother of his children, Libby; his three children, Haylea, Taylor and Tylor; and a host of aunts, uncles and friends. His funeral service will be noon Wednesday, at W. G. Hardy Funeral Home, with burial following in Bethany Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, 3-8 p.m and on Tuesday, noon - 8 p.m. at the funeral home
