JoAnn Barnes Rogers, 91, of Asheboro, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at the Hospice Home of High Point.


A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 2024, at New Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Thomas Rogers officiating.


Born in Randolph County, NC on June 27, 1933, Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of the late Lee and Lydia Barnes. 


In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Houston Thomas "H.T." Rogers; sisters, Jewell Barnes, Leta Morton, Mary Louise Barnes; and brothers, Morrison Barnes and John Wesley Barnes.


She is survived by her daughter, Tammie Rogers Swaim (Randall) of Thomasville; son, Thomas Anthony "Tony" Rogers (Ann) of Monroe; grandchildren, Chad Rogers (Melissa) of Weddington, Ashley Swaim Morgan (Tyler) of Maiden, Scott Swaim of Thomasville, Steven Clayton, Shawna Clayton both of Wingate, Chad Herd, Ashley Herd, both of Florida; great grandchildren, Dela Rogers, Maya Rogers, Chloe Rogers, Waylon Chase Morgan, Caden Herd, Dylan Herd, and Sander Clayton.

John Richard "Rick" Skeen

John Richard "Rick" Skeen, 70, of Asheboro, died Thursday, September 14, 2023, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2023, at Ridge Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tim Pheagin officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park.

Born on July 6, 1953 in Randolph County, son of the late J.D. Skeen and Donna Hoover Skeen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Holly Skeen.

He is survived by his wife Linda Latham Skeen of the home; daughter, Tonya Skeen of Asheboro; son, Dustin Skeen of Asheboro; son-in-law, Bradly Hargett of Asheboro; sister, LeAnn Marsh of Winston Salem; grandchildren, Darian Skeen, Daniel England, Christian Davis, Aaron Davis, Isaac Hargett, Katen Francis; great grandchild, Serena England.

Freddy Ray Ball, 70, of Cid Road passed Thursday, December 9, 2021 at his residence.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 3 PM at Walters Grove Baptist Church in Lexington with Rev. Chris Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at the church.
Born January 1, 1951 to the late Fred Welby Ball and Lucinda Hoover Ball in Randolph County. He served his country in the United States Army serving two tours in Vietnam.
In addition to his parents, Freddy was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Ball Hogan. Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Jeanette Garner Ball of the home; three daughters, Tracey “Sunshine” Ball Whitley and husband Brian, Cassie Ball Parrish and husband Thad; Chanté Ball Goins and husband Jamie, all of Lexington; a sister, Judy Ball Trotter Moody and husband Charles; seven grandchildren, Tyler Whitley and wife Callie, Madelynne Hill and Husband Garrett, Haley Talley and husband Christian, Chasen Parrish and girlfriend Camille Shelton, Samuel Goins, Silas Goins, Talynn Hill; three great-grandchildren, Jovie Whitley, Sawyer Whitley, Hudson Talley; extended family and many friends.

Margaret Odene Hoover Blake, age 84, of Franklinville died Friday, September 24, 2021 at Randolph Health Hospital, Asheboro.

Mrs. Blake will Lie-In-Repose Sunday, September 26, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC.

The funeral service will be held Monday, September 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM at South Plainfield Friends Meeting, 4033 Plainfield Road, Sophia with Rev. Hugh C. Spaulding officiating. Burial will follow in the Meeting Cemetery.

Mrs. Blake was born March 6, 1937, the daughter of Andrew Dewey Hoover and Vernie Quinie Blackwood Hoover.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Blake, brothers, Herman Hoover and Lloyd Hoover; and her sister, Rebecca Loflin.

DENTON - Robert Lee McDowell, 83 of  Denton, NC died Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021 at Pleasant Union Community Church at 2635 Pleasant Union Road, Denton conducted by the Rev. Danny Miller and the Rev. Ricky Payne. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will see friends at Pleasant Union Community Church from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service.

Mr. McDowell was born January 13, 1937 in Randolph County to Val McDowell and Lizzle Freedle McDowell. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother Waton McDowell and a sister Alice Hornady. 
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Klass McDowell of the home; a son, Gary McDowell and wife Joann of Thomasville; a grandson, Dustin McDowell and wife Ashley of Greensboro; great-granddaughter Bella; brother, Donald McDowell and wife Judy of Denton; sisters, Emma Payne, Lillie Buie and Becky Moore and husband Bill all of High Point, Margie Lail and Brenda Tucker and husband David all of Denton.

Eunice Marie Trotter McElreath, 91, of Denton, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton.

Mrs. McElreath will lie in state from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Ridge Funeral Home.Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 2021, at Pleasant Union Community Church Cemetery, Denton, with Rev. Danny Miller officiating. 

Born in Randolph County, NC, on May 15, 1929, Mrs. McElreath was the daughter of the late Roby W. and Nellie Tysinger Trotter. 

In addition to her parents, Eunice is preceded in death by her husband, Lee McElreath; sister, Ida Kearns, Martha Swaney; and brother, George Trotter.

Mrs. McElreath is survived by her daughter, Pat King and husband Roger of Denton; sons, Jimmy McElreath and wife Pam of Boone, NC, John McElreath and wife Becky of Denton, Greg McElreath and wife Amanda of Denton; sister, Grace Smith of Denton; grandchildren, Jennifer Jordan and husband Andy, Annette Manns and husband Steve, Kevin King, Steven King and wife Ashlee, Jason McElreath, Lynnea Dunlap and husband Sean, Austin McElreath, Evan McElreath and wife Katie; and 11 great grandchildren.

Shirley Margaret Hoover Barnes

Shirley Margaret Hoover Barnes, 85, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020. A private graveside service for Shirley will be held for the immediate family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born in Guilford County on June 19, 1935 to the late Robert and Beulah Dunlap Hoover. She married Archie Lee Barnes on September 1, 1957 who preceded her in death in June, 1989. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Hoover, a sister, Nancy Fine, and her son Archie Barnes II.

Surviving are three daughters: Arlee Boylen (Mark) of Archdale, Sandy Cook (Martin) of High Point, and Sherri Gilbert (Preston) of High Point; seven grandchildren: Brett Boylen, Brittany Boylen Beaver, Chelsea Cook Andrews, Alexander Cook, Madison Barnes, Phoenix Barnes, and Peyton Gilbert; four great grandchildren: Eloise and Winston Andrews, and Emma and Hank Beaver. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Kathy Harmon, Dorothy Hoover, and Marilyn Barnes. As well as her daughter-in-law, Tracy Hicks Barnes and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Louise Craven Watson-Robson

Betty Louise Craven Watson-Robson, age 77, of Asheboro passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Randolph Hospice House. A celebration of Betty's life will be held at a later date.

Born in Randolph County on March 25, 1943 to Ira and Annie Hoover Craven. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerry Giles Watson, Sr., her son, Jerry Giles Watson, Jr., and her sister, Clara Gatlin. Betty loved to cook, especially for other people, and put together two cookbooks. Betty had a good sense of humor. She is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Neal Robson; daughters, Robin Watson and Wendy Watson both of Asheboro; son, Rodney Todd of South Carolina; granddaughter, Alecia Benware and husband Brandon of Asheboro; great grandchildren, Asher and Hazel Benware; cousin, Larry Craven; niece, Susan Beasley, and nephew, Barry Gatlin.

Wilma Hoover Patterson, age 80, of Asheboro passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Randolph Hospice House. Mrs. Patterson's body will lie in repose on Monday, October 26, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro.

 A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Robbins, NC with Dr. J.F. Howard Sr. and Fred Huffstetler officiating.

Mrs. Patterson was born in Randolph County on December 23, 1939 to John Marmaduke "Duke" and Nora Mae Kinley Hoover. In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Patterson, and her siblings, Edith Loflin (Henry), Ben Hoover (Virginia), Wade Hoover (Ina), Joe Hoover (Nancy), Esther Shortsleeve (Jack), Stella Murray (H.B.), Bevilee Gallimore (Boyd), Clara Smith, and Maxine Hoover. She is survived by sons, Rodney Patterson (Mary Neal) of Asheboro and Chad Patterson (Annette) of Asheboro; grandchildren, Jack Patterson, Luke Patterson, Gray Patterson, and Jacob Patterson (Maggie); and brother-in-law, Marshall Smith.

ASHEBORO - James Kenneth "Ken" McDowell, 79, of Asheboro, passed away on Monday, Sept. 21, 2020 at Duke University Hospital. Mr. McDowell will lie in state on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro, NC. A graveside service will follow on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Mark C. Beane officiating.

Mr. McDowell was born in Randolph County on July 28, 1941 to Hayes and Grace Gallimore McDowell.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Kenneth McDowell, and brothers, Junior and Everette McDowell.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Sellers McDowell; daughters, Tamela Abboud (Hassan) of Raleigh and Shanna Darwish (Mohamed) of Cary; daughter-in-law, Stacy Asbill McDowell of Seagrove; grandchildren, Hillary Bunting (Aaron) of Asheboro, Ahmad Emara of Raleigh, Sara Darwish of Chapel Hill, Summer Darwish of Cary, and triplets, Salem, Noah, and Rose Darwish all of Cary; great-granddaughter, Hadley Bunting; sisters, Mazie Owens of Asheboro and Martha Bundy (James) of Asheboro; and special friend, Eddie Hough of Asheboro.

Mrs. Diane Crotts Coffey, age 80 of Asheboro died Wednesday, September 9 at Sandy Ridge Assisted Living in Candor.

Services will be private with burial next to her grandparents, Carl and Clatie Hoover in the Denton Town Cemetery.

Mrs. Coffey was born August 22, 1940 and was the daughter of Dennie H Crotts and Blanche Hoover Crotts, preceded by her sons, Rodney Tucker and his wife Debbie and Brent Tucker and his wife Tammy.

She is survived by her husband Larry Coffey of the home and a sister, Judy West of Hickory.

Stella Joyce Murray Wicker Dies

Stella Joyce Murray Wicker, 73, passed Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Christian Church with Rev. Howard Spray officiating; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty.

She is preceded in death by her parents Henry Bunn, Jr. and Estella Blanche Hoover Murray.

Surviving is her husband of 50 years, Roy Oakel Wicker, Jr.; daughter, Tammy Wicker Wade and husband, Ricky; son, John Peter Wicker and wife, Deonna; grandchildren, Joshua Wade and Faith Wade; brothers, Kenneth Murray, Benny Murray and wife, Eula Mae, Lester Murray and wife, Teresa.

ARCHDALE – Lera McDowell Owens, 90, passed on Friday, April 3, 2020, at her home. a private graveside service will be held Monday at Mt. Olive Wesleyan Church Cemetery with Pastor Wayne Bryd officiating.
Born on February 18, 1930 to the last Alfred and Mamie McDowell. 
She married the love of her life on December 21, 1946; they were married for 58 years until his death in 2005. She was blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.  
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Owens; daughter, Anna Marie Owens; son-in -law, Isaac Farlow; sisters, Dorothy M. McDonald, Eloise M. Reid, Magelene M. Cook, Irene M. Parks, and Betty M. Davis; and brothers, George McDowell, Riley McDowell, and Garland McDowell.
Surviving are children, Vickie Owens Farlow of Sophia, and Steven Owens (Carolyn) of Colorado; grandchildren, Jeffrey Farlow (Marie) of Sophia, Catherine C. Ritch (Michael) of Asheboro, Tonya Ferguson of Randleman, William Owens of California, Steven Viola, Rosie Kralnje (Marco Polini), and Abbey Dellwo all of Colorado; great-grandchildren, Monte Paul Coggins III , Zachary Coggins (Emily), Ashley Farlow, Seth Ferguson, Macy Ferguson, Victoria Coggins, Amber Farlow, Dalton Ferguson, Ian Coggins, Abigail Farlow, Tessa Ferguson, and Naih Polini; and great-great-grandson, Garrison Isaac Farlow.
She also has three surviving siblings, Martha McDowell Shives (Harold) of High Point, Terry McDowell (Margie) of High Point and Julius McDowell of Trinity; special sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” O. McDowell; and many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney Franklin Smith of the home; her daughter, Robin Smith of Brown Summit; sisters, Barbara Hoover Lambeth of Denton, Vickie Hoover Atkins and husband Tony of Lexington and brothers, Kenneth Hoover and wife Kay of Denton, Reese Hoover of Denton and Phil Hoover and wife Brenna of Trinity.

Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro.Born September 30, 1941 and raised in the Farmer area; preceded in death by her Father, Jesse Willard Rich, Mother, Wincie Hoover Rich, and Brother, Willard Carroll “Billy” Rich. She is survived by her husband, Wade Craven of Randleman, her three children, Doyle Craven and his partner Charlie Southern (Randleman, NC), Emily King and her husband David (Franklinville, NC), Sherri Misenheimer and her husband Derrick (Concord, NC); her seven grandchildren, Dustin King and his wife Kristen, Ethan King, Elise King, Megan Misenheimer, Nathan Misenheimer, Dylan Misenheimer, and Kristan Misenheimer; and one great-grandchild, Evan King.
