A private committal service will be held at Charlotte United Methodist Church Cemetery in Asheboro. Born October 17, 1928 in Asheboro to the late Robert and Lillian Spencer. Claude and Wanda were married November 18, 1942 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Surviving are:  her son Claude Dale Briles of Golden, her son Clyde Noah Briles and his wife Diane of Loveland, and her daughter Judith Faye Swens and her husband John of Loveland. She also blessed several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She also loved and cherished seven grandchildren, Crystal Christiansen (Elliot Everhart), Bradley Burton (Martha), Misty Payne (Richard), Todd Bodenheimer (Amy), Tawana Gee (Mark), Mark Swaney (Amber), and Greg Swaney. She was also blessed with fifteen great-grandchildren, Nicholas Christiansen (Brionna), Kasey Christiansen, Daxton Bodenheimer, Courtney Bodenheimer, Austin Gee, Jacob Burton, Jenna Burton, Tyler Wimbley, Trevor Wimbley, Ashley Swaney, Trey Swaney, Dylan Swaney, Chloe Swaney, Tyler Payne, and Catherine Payne; two great-great grandchildren, Landon Christiansen and Kayden Roberts. Clarence (Junior) Robbins Jr., 80, a lifelong resident of Trinity passed on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 29, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Trinity with the Reverend David Mercadante officiating and Joe Peterson giving the eulogy. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Born on February 02, 1934 in Davidson County, a son of the late Clarence Lee Robbins Sr. and Nellie Johnson Robbins. Preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Christine Robbins; a grandson, Christopher Stevens; and three brothers; Alby Robbins, David Robbins, and Benny Robbins. Surviving: his wife Ann Dunivin Robbins; his daughters, Cathy Stevens and husband Tim and Leslie Toth, all of Trinity; sons; Craig Robbins and wife Sherri of Trinity and Mark Robbins and wife Deanna of Kinston, Al.; a sister; Frances Fields and husband Earl and a brother, Kermit Robbins and wife Myra all of Trinity. Charles Evans Hoover passed June 15, 2014 in Kapalua Bay, Maui, HawaiiA memorial service will be held in memory of Charles Hoover at First Wesleyan Church in High Point at 3:00 on Sunday, June 22nd. Born April 8th, 1937 in Randolph County to Joseph Hobson and Lanie Johnson Hoover.  Preceded in death by his father, Joseph Hobson Hoover; his mother, Mary Layton Hoover; and his brother, Dale Johnson Hoover. Survived by his wife, Shirley Murrow Hoover; his son, Michael Charles Hoover of King and his wife, Sherry; his daughter, Melanie Hoover Patton of Kernersville, and her husband, Kevin. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jordan Michael Hoover, Kaley Ann Patton, Connor Evans Patton and Quinn Bryant Patton; and one brother, Joseph Neal Hoover of Colfax.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Lee Ridge, three sisters and five brothers. Survived by her daughters, Dianne Gray and husband, Terry, of Asheboro, NC, Joanne Ritter and husband, Levis, of Ramseur, NC, Susan Moore and husband, Conley, of Franklinville, NC; son, Dennis Ridge and wife, Sandra, of Asheboro, NC; sister, Vida Swaney, of Thomasville, NC; brother, Casper McDowell, of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Dwayne Ritter, Tina Yates, Scott Gray, Rob Moore, Steven Moore; step-granddaughters, Angie Winslow, Amy McDonald; five great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.

Elton Welborn officiating. Entombment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Born on January 26, 1928, a daughter of the late Henry Hulin and Adie Gordon Hulin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Daniel Charles Brown, as well as two daughters; Carroll Gray and Edith Ann Brown. Surviving is her daughter; Janice Cranford of Thomasville, a son; Jerry D. Brown and wife Linda of Holden Beach, NC; a sister; Donna Mabe and husband Steve of Thomasville; also surviving are grandchildren; Tabitha Mickey, Kendra Koontz, Barry Cranford, Daniel Cranford, Tara Cranford, Jeffrey Brown, Timothy Brown, Jeremy Brown, and Kimberly Brown. Gladys was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren.

Norman Austin Briles Dies

YELM, Wash.-Norman Austin Briles, 85, formerly of Plainville, passed away peacefully at home on May 8. A graveside service, Rev. Alfred Helms officiating, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Plainville Cemetery in Indiana. Born Sept. 29, 1928, in Epsom, to the late Austin and Helen (Scott) Briles. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Verda M. (Burkhart) Briles; a daughter, Cathy E. Briles of Overland Park, Kansas; a son, Douglas J. (Mary) Briles of Yelm; and a half brother, Bill Dawson. Preceded in death by his sister, Ramona Smiley; two half brothers James and Gene Dawson; and a half sister, Nancy Hinkle.

Pete Bumgarner and Rev. Joe Beane officiating. No formal visitation will be held. Born June 17, 1927 in Randolph County to John Nance and Mary Wall Nance. Veteran in the U. S. Navy serving with the Seabees during World War II; preceded in death by his parents. Married October 9, 1946 to Ruby Wardlaw Nance, who survives of Piedmont Crossing. Also surviving are sons, John Nance and wife Marilyn of Trinity, and Tom Nance and wife Kim of Thomasville; daughters, Sherry Bumgarner and husband Pete of Thomasville, Martha Jo Hill and husband Jimmy of Denton, and Gina Fidler and husband Scott of Raleigh; one brother, John Nance, Jr. of Thomasville; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Tildon George Floyd (Slab Man), 84, went peacefully to be with the Lord on April 16, 2014 at his home with his family by his side following two years of declining health. Born on September 8, 1929 in Randolph County, a son of George H. Floyd and Minnie Moore Floyd. Margaret Cameron Tavendale Passes

“If tears could build a stairway, And memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven And bring you home again.” Our beloved Margaret Cameron Tavendale has walked the righteous stairs and into the arms of thy savior. Her homecoming came Saturday night, April 5, 2014 at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland. Born June 13, 1927 in Montrose, Scotland the second eldest of eight to the late Charles Millan & Beatrice Hampton Cameron. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gordon Tavendale, brothers Charles & Tommy Cameron and her sister Elizabeth Bushnell "Betty" Morrison. It is the wishes of Margaret to be cremated and no services are planned, at her request. “Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.” Those who are left to mourn until the coming of the Lord are her children, Douglas & Beryl Tavendale; sisters Sheila Cameron Spellman (Johnny Spellman), Catherine Cameron Briles (James Rex Briles); Brothers James Hampton "Mickey" Cameron and Garry Cameron (Mary McLean); and three grandchildren. Margaret is my aunt and sister to my mother Catherine Cameron Briles. We are deeply saddened at the passing of Margaret and ask for prayers for our family. The Briles Information Network has received word of the passing of George Talmadge Briles who passed on March 16, 2014 in Guilford County, NC. Born on July 27, 1939, he is the son of the late John William "Buck" Briles and Sara Ellen Williams. This death has been verified through the Register of Deeds in Guilford County, however no formal death notice is available. The BIN will obtain a copy of the DC to see which funeral home handled the arrangements. Surviving is his step sister, Gail Smith Beck and half sister, Bonnie Briles Henry.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Jarrett and a brother, Bobby Hulin. On July 4, 1954 he was married to Sylvia Hooks Hulin, who died January 26, 2012. Surviving are daughters, Carolyn Curry and husband Marvin and Cindy Rose and husband Joey, both of Archdale and Jamie Tucker and husband Paul of Thomasville; sisters, Patsy Shaw and husband Larry of Randleman, Shirley Jester of Trinity and Dorothy Floyd of Thomasville; eight grandchildren, Jordan Rose, Eden Latham, Scott Howard, Tim Davenport, Angie Hunt, Crystal Rowe, Jeff Jarrett and Burl Davenport; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ella Briles Stewart Passes

JAMESTOWN — Mrs. Ella Lee Stewart, age 87, died Thursday, February 13, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Funeral Service Chapel in High Point with the Reverend Bruce Hartgrove officiating. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. A native of Orange County, born December 10, 1926, a daughter of the late Willard and Ollie Ward Briles. On December 21, 1946 she was married to James Robert “Buster” Stewart, who died September 26, 2007. In addition to her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and Walace Briles. Survived by four children, Mary Carol Forkner and her husband Bobby of Asheboro, Janice Zachary and her husband Barry of Archdale, Vivian Stewart of the home and Lisa Shuster and her husband Roger of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Lewis of High Point; six grandchildren, Jeff Reed, Emily Warehime and her husband Sam, Liz Ahmadivarji and her husband Arya, Todd Zachary and his wife Karen, Brandon Zachary and his wife Mandy and Craig Forkner and his wife Akane. Also surviving are twelve great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Brianna, Brandon, London, Yancey, Kyndall, Spencer, Aubrey, Maddox, Takeru, Ellie and Robert.

Bonnie Stokes, 91, of Beaumont, Texas died Friday, January 31, 2014, at Pelican Bay Assisted Living, Beaumont. Wake: 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 3, 2014, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1350 North 23rd Street, Beaumont. Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, with her interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont Born on October 29, 1922, to Leona H. Connally Briles and Worthy H. Briles, in Fort Worth. Survivors include husband, Jerome Stokes; sons, Rev. Rodney G. Spencer and his wife, Kim, of Memphis, Tennessee and Gary M. Spencer and his wife, Renee, of Beaumont; grandsons, Cale M. Spencer, Jeremy D. Spencer, and Walker Bussey-Spencer; granddaughter, Mollie Bussey-Spencer; three great-grandchildren; brother, W.E. Marlene Kay Christensen Strauss passed January 30, 2014, at her home in Atlantic, Iowa. 

A celebration of life will be held at the Legion Hall in Anita, Iowa, on Monday, February 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. with lunch following.

She was born September 13, 1946, to Arlo and Frances Briles Christensen. Marlene married Dennis Carl Strauss September 20, 1965. 

Preceding Marlene in death are her husband, Dennis; her parents, Arlo and Frances; her parents-in-law, Carl and Lucielle Strauss; her infant brother, Arlo Junior; her sister, Margaret Marnin; and her brother-in-law, Marvin Fries.

Marlene is survived by her son, Brook and his wife, Shirley, of Elliot, Iowa, and her daughter, Amy and her husband, Bill, of Atlantic, Iowa; her sisters, Mary Lou (Larry) of Anita, IA, Mardyll of Fort Collins, CO; her brother, David of Anita, IA; five grandchildren, Cory, Alyssa, Alex, Trint and Aaron; six great-grandchildren, Zain, Laurie, Madison, Lidea, Aleah and Austyn.

Dr. David Briles Named NAI Fellow!

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has named 143 innovators to NAI Fellow status, one of which is Dr. David Briles. Dr. Briles is a professor of Microbiology and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He holds several patents in pneumococcal vaccine antigens. His present studies are on protein virulence factors of pneumococci, their mechanisms of action and potential use in vaccines.

Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.

Dr. Briles will be inducted by Andy Faile, deputy U.S. commissioner for patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, during the Third Annual Conference of the National Academy of Inventors, on March 7, 2014, in Alexandria, Va. Each will receive a special trophy and rosette pin.

Dr. Briles is the son of Dr. Worthie Elwood Briles and the late Clara Wilson Briles. The Briles Information Network congratulates Dr. Briles on this prestigious award!

Franklin Stevens Briles passed December 10, 2013, in Fallbrook California at the age of 92. A private family burial is planned at the Crystal Cathedral, Memorial Gardens. Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, 1:30 PM. Born August 5, 1921 to Franklin Thomas Briles and Anna May Briles Schott. Passing before him is his older brother Paul Briles, ex-wife Joyce McLean Briles Eadie and son Franklin Stevens Briles Jr. Surviving are: daughter, Linda J. Rachel 'Rae' Briles passed away January 5, 2014 in Oregon. A service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in Portland, at Hustad's Chapel. Born Feb. 20, 1921, in New York, she was married to the late Cecil O. Briles who passed in 1999. Burial will be in the Williamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Kenneth “Ken” Clayton Lambeth Dies

Kenneth “Ken” Clayton Lambeth, 60, a resident of Fuller Mill Road North passed Thursday, January 9, 2014 at his home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Terry Boles officiating.
