Gary Dean Etzel

Gary Dean Etzel, 65, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021. A family only service will be held until a Celebration of Life can be scheduled.

Gary was born on Jan. 3, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Preceded in death by his father, Robert Etzel; grandparents, Ralph and Bertha Briles and Clifford and Edith Etzel; uncle, Ralph Briles; and brother-in-law, Brian Denny.

Gary is survived by his mother, Beverly J. Briles Etzel; brother, Steven (Teresa) Etzel; sisters, Kimberly (John) Etzel, Janine (Dave) Wagner and Maureen Denny; and a large extended family.

Donald Ray Garren

Donald Ray Garren, 59, of Asheboro, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021 at his home.

 The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2021, and other times at the home of Brandi and Justin Morris. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. David Hunt Officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Memorial Gardens.

Donald was born on August 4, 1962 in Randolph County. Donald was preceded in death by his father, Boyd Hayes Garren, and his grandson, Easton Matthews.

Mr. Garren is survived by his daughters, Brittany Matthews and husband Brandon of Florence, SC, Brandi Morris and husband Justin of Asheboro; mother, Rosa Crotts Garren of Asheboro; sister, Clairmae Robbins of Asheboro; brothers, Richard Garren, Roger Garren and wife Trish, Jerry Garren and wife Angie, all of Asheboro; grandchildren, Holdyn Matthews, Hudson Matthews, and Kimber Morris.

Lewis Jeffrey Loflin Passes

 


Lewis Jeffrey Loflin passed away December 17, 2021. 

A service to celebrate Lewis’ life will be held on Tuesday, December 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Marlboro Friends Meeting, with Pastor John Sides and Ricky Sessoms, Minister, officiating. The committal service will follow in the Meeting cemetery. His family will receive friends on Monday, December 20, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Mr. Loflin was born August 5, 1938 to James Clyde and Cora Laone Davis Loflin. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; Linda Patton Loflin; his sons, Lyle Loflin and his wife, Kelly, Les Loflin and his wife, Ovelia, Lyndon Loflin and his wife, Lisa; his sister, Jessie Loflin Small and her husband, Paul. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Hayley Brown and her husband, Michael, Kayla Nichols and her husband, Elijah, Holly Bissette, Natalie Cannon and her husband, Will and 6 great grandchildren.

Freddy Ray Ball, 70, of Cid Road passed Thursday, December 9, 2021 at his residence.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 3 PM at Walters Grove Baptist Church in Lexington with Rev. Chris Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at the church.
Born January 1, 1951 to the late Fred Welby Ball and Lucinda Hoover Ball in Randolph County. He served his country in the United States Army serving two tours in Vietnam.
In addition to his parents, Freddy was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Ball Hogan. Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Jeanette Garner Ball of the home; three daughters, Tracey “Sunshine” Ball Whitley and husband Brian, Cassie Ball Parrish and husband Thad; Chanté Ball Goins and husband Jamie, all of Lexington; a sister, Judy Ball Trotter Moody and husband Charles; seven grandchildren, Tyler Whitley and wife Callie, Madelynne Hill and Husband Garrett, Haley Talley and husband Christian, Chasen Parrish and girlfriend Camille Shelton, Samuel Goins, Silas Goins, Talynn Hill; three great-grandchildren, Jovie Whitley, Sawyer Whitley, Hudson Talley; extended family and many friends.

Elizabeth "Lib" Robbins Howell, age 87, of Asheboro passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at North Pointe of Archdale.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 from 10:30-11:00 am at West Bend United Methodist Church, 1080 Albemarle Road in Asheboro. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at West Bend United Methodist Church with Rev. Kari L. Howard officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Howell was born in Forsyth County on October 30, 1934 to Thomas and Mattie Pierce Robbins. In addition to her parents, Lib was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl "Bob" Howell, son, Timmy Howell, and brothers, Pierce and Lloyd Robbins.

Edith E. Briles, age 70, passed away peacefully at her home of Evart, Mi on Thursday, December 2, 2021. She was born May 11, 1951 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Wayne and Theresa (Carter) Briles. P
receded in death by her parents, her brothers; Wayne Briles Jr., Ken Briles, Mark Briles, Lucas Briles; and sister; Peggy Briles.

Catherine Ann "Cathy" Hoover Robbins, 75, of Asheboro, died Monday, November 29, 2021 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

Born March 18, 1946, in Randolph Co., NC, Mrs. Robbins was the daughter of the late Wade and Ina Routh Hoover. 

Mrs. Robbins was also preceded in death by her brother Tommy Hoover.

Born in Randolph County on October 9, 1931 son of the late Herbert and Nannie Poole Skeen. Veteran: United State Army, during the Korean War. Preceded in death by wife of 55 years, Eva Hussey Skeen; sister Hazel Lee Ennis; brothers: Britt Skeen, Clifford Skeen, J D Skeen.

Born on April 17, 1943 in Randolph County, a son of the late Samuel Ray and Dorothy Frazier Kinley. 

He is survived by his children, J. Todd Kinley and his wife, Leslie Anderson, Maria Kinley and her husband, Gaeton Leake and Jennifer Holland and her husband, Tom Holland; his sister, Katherine K. Garrison; his brother, Terry Kinley and his wife, Jane. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joshua Kinley, Caleb Kinley, Adrienne Anderson, Katherine Anderson, Arlo Leake, Vivian Leake, and Garret Holland.

Sophia- Ruth Hunt Brady, 69, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital. 

Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 – 2:00pm, Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Christian Fellowship Church, 3232 Walker Dr, Asheboro, NC 27205 with a service to follow at 2:00pm and fellowship immediately after.

Born in Randolph County on May 4, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Bim and Frances Hunt. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 49 years, Roger Brady; daughter Olivia Blanton and her husband Jody; grandson, Jonah Blanton; siblings, Brenda Thomas and her husband Paul, Sam Hunt and his wife Janet, Clifford Hunt and his wife Virginia, David Hunt and his wife Kathy, Gail Bailey and her husband Darrell and Lucy Lucas and her husband Bobby; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Doris Ann Welborn Hayes, 87, of Thomasville passed away Friday, November 5, 2021 at Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Gary Myers officiating. Doris will lie in state at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville on Wednesday from 8:00 AM-6:00 PM for those wanting to pay their respects, she will also lie in state at the funeral home on Thursday prior to the service, from 8:00 AM-10:30 AM.

Doris was born July 01, 1934 in Davidson County to the late Dewey Lee Welborn, Sr. and Ocia Hughes Welborn. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Roy Hayes on May 9, 1995; two brothers, Dewey Welborn, Jr. and Bobby Welborn.

Surviving are her two sons, Randall Lee Hayes of the home and Tony Wayne Hayes of Lexington; one daughter, Deborah Hayes Chod and husband Robert A. Chod of Sarasota, Florida; two brothers, Charles Welborn and wife Shelby of Thomasville and Joe Grooms and wife Patsy of Lexington; one grandson, Adam Wayne Hayes of Thomasville; one great-granddaughter, Emmie Lou Hayes; and one daughter-in-law, Teresa Hayes of Thomasville.

William Allen Farlow

William Allen Farlow, 84, resident of Trinity, died November 5, 2021 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Mr. Jerry Farlow officiating.  A private interment will follow the service at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service on Saturday.

He was born May 7, 1937 in Randolph County, a son to Allen and Millie Sink Farlow. US Veteran of the United States Army National Guard.

In 1963, he married the former Shirley Ann Wilcox who preceded him in death in 1981.  He also was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Farlow (Peggy) and three sisters, Doris Lilly (Walter),  Phyllis Lowdermilk (Roy) and Louise Wall (Lyn).  Surviving is his daughter, Kaye Martin and husband Ronnie of Trinity; four grandchildren, Joseph Martin (Julia),  Rebecca Dixon (Joe),  Ben Martin (Crystal), and Sarah Ritner (John) and six great-grandchildren, Weston, Jude, Caden, Silas, Luke, and Jett.

Jack Alson Kearns Dies

HIGH POINT - Jack Alson Kearns, 88, died Friday, October 29, 2021, at High Point Medical Center. We are waiting on the full death notice from Cumby F.H.

Funeral service celebrating Jack’s life will be held 2:00 PM Monday, November 1, 2021, at Lebanon United Methodist Church with Pastor Joseph Kim and Pastor Mark Kearns officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 PM Monday at the church prior to the service.

He was born February 1, 1933, in High Point and was the son of the late George Howard and Anna Blanche Rush Kearns. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Caroline Kearns; two sisters, Anna Ruth Williams and Betty Smith; two brothers, Hiatt Kearns and Gene Kearns; and a beloved dog, Toby.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hoke Kearns, whom he married on February 23, 1965; two sons, Andy Kearns (fiancee, Donna Hughes) of Trinity and Tim Kearns (wife, Mary) of Wallburg; three grandchildren, Brandon Kearns, Brian Kearns, and Christina Kearns; great-grandson, Mason Kearns; and his beloved dog, Taco.

Rick Dean Briles, 61, of Catawba passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

A service to celebrate Rick’s life will be held on Monday, October 25, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. in the Arbor at Pisgah United Methodist Church in Catawba. Rev. David Hawkins and Rev. Buddy Compton will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. at Pisgah United Methodist Church.

He was born October 24, 1959 in Catawba County to the late Edward Lloyd Briles and Joann McAdams Briles.  Retired Law Enforcement Officer, US Marshal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Vicki Briles and Sandi Briles Wagner.

Mr. Miller was born in Asheboro on April 9, 1949 to Gilbert and Lydia Voncannon Miller. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Mr. Norman O’Neil Nelson, 73, resident of Sophia, died October 20, 2021 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

Mr. Nelson was born June 1, 1948 in High Point, a son to the late William Alan and Bertie Skeen Nelson. In 1970, he married the former Beverly McCormick, who survives of the residence. Also surviving are his son, Seth Nelson of Greensboro; daughter, Miriam Nelson of Trinity; sister, Audrey Toth and husband Kelly of Sophia; brother, Keith Nelson and wife Myrna of Sophia; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dolan Ervin Pierce, 76, passed Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Hospice Home at High Point.  

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Gary Myers officiating.  Mr. Pierce will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the cemetery 30 minutes prior to the graveside service and he will lie in state at the funeral home on Friday, October 22, 2021 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM for members of the community to pay their respects.  No formal visitation will be held. 

Mr. Pierce was born on October 25, 1944 in Randolph County, NC to Royce Reece Pierce and Millie Frances Barnes Pierce.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Don Pierce; and three sisters, Jewel Watford, Pauline Gordon, and Mary Hughes.

Surviving is his loving wife, Bonnie Grubb Pierce of the home; son, Joel Pierce and wife Ani of Thomasville; brother, Charles Pierce of Lexington; sister, Louise Elberson of Thomasville; and three grandchildren, Justin Canady and wife Tara of Charleston, SC, Sydni Pierce and Kirsten Pierce, both of Thomasville.

Meredith Gallimore Thornburg, age 87, of Asheboro passed away on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Randolph Hospice House.

Mrs. Thornburg was born in Randolph County on March 3, 1934 to Hal and Lola Briles Gallimore. In addition to her parents, Meredith was preceded in death by her husband, Reid Thornburg.

She is survived by her daughters, Jenni T. Breedlove and husband Heath of Asheboro and Laura T. Garner of Asheboro; grandchildren, Cami and Carson Garner, and Lauran Breedlove; great grandchildren, Braxton Vick and Charlie Harkey; sister, Margie Brown of Asheboro; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Phillip Asther Ridge, 80, a resident of Providence Place, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville with Rev. Bynum Orr officiating.  No formal visitation will be held.  

Born on July 14, 1941 in Davidson County, NC to Asther Venson Ridge and Beulah Raines Ridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Ridge; and a sister, Shelby Ridge.

In 1962, he married Nancy Lou Bean, who survives of the home; also surviving are his daughters, Penny Ridge Bell and husband Timothy of Thomasville and Amy Ashlaw of CO; brothers, Randy Ridge and wife Angie of Greensboro and Tony Ridge of Archdale; four grandchildren, Sara Parrish, Gracie Bell, Venson Nunnally, and Amber Nunnally; and two great-grandchildren, Eva Parrish and Dax Parrish.

A service to celebrate Jackie’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with Bishop Steve Rich officiating. The committal service will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Monday, October 11, from 6 until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

He was born on October 15, 1938 in Randolph County, a son of the late William Robert Walker and Eula Rush Walker.
 In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brothers, Rayford, Robert, Paul, Charles, Odis, Benson, Dale, Glenn, Roy and Billy.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Priscilla O’Brien Walker; his children, Renee Walker and Timothy Walker; his sister, Ruth Wall and her husband, Raymond; his grandchildren, Chris, Kayla, Lexi and Jake. Also surviving are his great grandchildren, Eli, Ezra and Eden and a number of nieces and nephews.

Michael was born January 04, 1953 in Davidson County to the late Howard Sebert Hayes and Lorene Welborn Hayes. Veteran of the United States Navy.

Surviving are is his loving wife, Ellen June Maness Hayes of the home; one son, Jonathan Michael Hayes; one daughter, Victoria Michelle Hayes; two brothers, Timothy Hayes, Mark Hayes and wife Tracey; one sister, Elizabeth Varner.

Iris "Bo-d" Clark Morgan, 93, of Asheboro, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at her home.

Entombment will follow at Randolph Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

Born on September 26, 1928, in Guilford Co., to the late Daniel Archie Clark and Ina Pierce Clark. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Jennings Morgan; sons, Kim "Kim-bo" Stephen Morgan, Ken Jennings Morgan; daughter, Darnell Morgan Long; son-in-law, John Phillip Morgan; three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Morgan Austin (Richard) of Randleman, Pamela Morgan Morgan of Robbins, Lisa Morgan Bunting of Katy, TX, Anna Morgan of Asheboro; daughter-in-law, Lona A. Paul Marie Kindley Murdered in Winston-Salem

Paula Marie Kindley, 48, of Thomasville was located in the woods near Chevy Chase Street and Jones Meadow Drive after being reported missing earlier in the week. Case is being classified as a homicide. Kindley had obvious signs of trauma. No suspect(s) at this time. Ms. Kindley is seven generations back to Margaret Briles Kindley.

James Franklin Kinley Dies

Mr. James Franklin Kinley, 69, of Lexington passed Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 7 PM at the J.C. Green and Sons chapel in Thomasville. The family will greet friends in the chapel one hour prior to the funeral.

James was born on January 15, 1952 to the late Wade Dennis Kinley and Dorothy Glascoe Kinley in Guilford County.  In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Farmer Kinley in 2014; two siblings, John Kinley, Louise Elberson; a son-in-law, Troy Wilson.

Surviving is his daughter, Desa Lee Wilson of Lexington; three siblings, Judy Thompson (William), Billy Allen Kinley (Randy), Larry Wayne Kinley; three grandchildren, Jeffery Kinley, Misty Kaye Kinley, Aahlyaa Kinley; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Kayelee; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Doris “Evelyn” Parrish Clark, 88, of Archdale passed Friday, October 1, 2021.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 11 AM at Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery in High Point with Rev. Tommy Kidd officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery. There will be no formal viewing or visitation.

Born August 10, 1933 to the late William and Annie Clodfelter Parrish in Davidson County.  In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Alvin Burton Clark in 2018; four brothers, Brown, Oscar, Dugan, Reece Parrish.

Surviving are her two children; Terry Clark of Linwood, Sylvia Mounce (Keith) of Sophia; four grandchildren, Michael Lowe (Lori) of Thomasville, Terry Clark (Jessica) of Pfafftown, Kevin Lowe of Trinity, Sonya Clark of Fayetteville; eleven great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Nancy Adams Dunn, age 80, of Mountain Vista Health Park, Denton and formerly of Asheboro passed away on September 29, 2021 at Mountain Vista Health Park.

A graveside service will be held at 4:30 PM Sunday, October 3 at Callicutt Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery in Troy. The family will see friends from 3:00 until 4:00 PM Sunday, October 3 at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

Mrs. Dunn was born November 15, 1940 in Davidson County to Earlie Adams and Sallie Ann Kearns Adams. She was married to Ronald Alvin Dunn, Sr. who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Haydee Adams.

She is survived by her sons, Ronald Dunn and wife Carolyn of Calhoun, Ga and Ricky Dunn and wife Tina of Sophia; Grandchildren, Hannah Dunn, Noah Dunn, Jeffrey Dunn and Ronnie Dunn; great grandchildren Caitlin, Harrison, Julian and Maddox; brother, Thomas Adams of Denton; sisters Rebecca Rivero of Walkertown, Diane Bell and husband Curtis of Kernersville and Rosa Melton and husband James of Angier. Zelda Warren Pierce Willard, 78, of  Floyd, VA passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, VA.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Walter’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Shannon Hicks. A celebration of life service is being planned for a later date at Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Floyd, VA. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12:30 until 1:30 PM at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

Zelda was born in Davidson County on December 19, 1942, to the late Rev. Warren E. Pierce and the late Oleene Gallimore Pierce.

Bob J. Briles Dies

Bob J. Briles of Nashville, IL, passed Sunday, September 19, 2021, at his home among his family. He had reached the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 15 days. Per the wishes of Bob and his family, cremation will be performed and there will be a private family service and burial at the Old St. Ann Cemetery in Nashville, IL.

Bob was born November 4, 1932, in Kansas City, MO to William O. and Bulah A. (Shehorn) Briles. He grew up in the Alton, MO. Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He married Kathleen (Katy) Ferree on August 7, 1960 at Mattoon. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Boyd, and his nephew.

He leaves to mourn Katy, his wife of 61 years, his sons Randy and wife Andrea, Kent and wife Karen, and daughter Shelly, four grandsons and three step-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

Debbie Sue Key Cox, age 63, of Asheboro passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at her home.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 3, 2021 from 12:00 noon-1:45 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Mrs. Cox was born in Randolph County on November 6, 1957 to Brady and Margaret Briles Key. In addition to her parents, Debbie was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Cox. 

She is survived by her daughter, Tinia Murphy Duty (Kennith) of Asheboro; grandchildren, Makayla, Savannah, Makenzie, and Mason; siblings, Roger Key (Rhonda) of Burlington, Virginia Foust of Sophia, James Key (Donna) of Asheboro, and Phillip Key (Peggy) of Asheboro; and numerous nieces and nephews who were very special to her.

Thomas Lee Chism Sr.

Thomas Lee Chism Sr., 75, of Flaherty, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown.

The funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, in the Chapel of Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg. Burial follows in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Brandenburg. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Thomas was born April 29, 1946 in Irvington, the son of the late Herman and Maude Williams Chism. His sister, Kathleen Elliott; two brothers, Frank Basham and James E. Chism; and in-laws, Leo and Minnie Briles also preceded him in death.

Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army, who served in Vietnam.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Donna E. Briles Chism; two children, Lakeena (Andrew Hall) Clifford of Rineyville and Tommy Chism Jr. of Flaherty; a sister, Jean Heimler of Michigan; five grandchildren, Brianna Clifford, Briley Clifford, Chelsea (Bobby) Armes, Veronica (Brian) Anderson and Megan Chism; a bonus granddaughter, Hannah Bradshaw; and eight great-grandchildren, Darci Skillman, Garren Anderson, Maeve Anderson, Jasper Armes, Blayne Armes, Relic Armes, Anastasia Chism and Jack Chism; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Austin Barnhart, 84, of Independence, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, August 17th, 2021, at Journey Home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Visitation will be held at Potts Chapel in Independence on Thursday, August 19th, with the family greeting friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be on Friday, August 20th at 1:00 pm at Potts Chapel with interment immediately following at Neodesha Cemetery. 

Born to Charles and Ruth (Briles) Barnhart on November 20, 1936, in Neodesha, Kansas. In 1958, Gerald married Charlotte Scott. The two later divorced. He then married Delores Labarr in 2007 in Miami, Oklahoma. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruth Barnhart, sons, Scott Leroy and Jeffery Ray Barnhart, brothers, James, Merle, and Clyde Barnhart and sisters, Daisey Gullick and Betty Oyler.

Surviving are his wife, Delores of the home, daughters, Elizabeth Ann Schwatken and husband Wilbur of Sycamore, Karen Suzanne Davis and husband Ron of Cherryvale, daughter in-law, Amy Louise Barnhart of Independence, step children, John Marsh, Ray Marsh, and Karen Marsh, sisters, Sandra Walls of Owasso, OK, and Mary Bowen of Colony, KS, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and his dear dog, Rosie.

John R. Briles, 89, of Bloomington passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at home with family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Friday August 13, 2021 at the Arlington United Methodist Church in Bloomington. With Pastor Rose Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens. A visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday, August 12, 2021 and Friday from 10:00am to service time both at the Arlington United Methodist Church. He was born on June 13, 1932 in Greene County, Indiana, the son of Austin and Ada (Strauser) Briles. He married Dolores Calhoun on July 21, 1957 in Weedman, Illinois. Veteran of the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dee; his two brothers, Charlie and Edgar Briles; and two sisters, Martha Loder and Luella Harper.

John is survived by two sons, Kevin (Terri) Briles and Craig (Marci) Briles both of Bloomington; his grandchildren Travis Briles; Joshua Briles; MacKenzie (Trey) Smith; Benjamin Briles; Nicholson (Ashlan) Briles; Maxwell Briles; Jonathan Briles and Brandi (Shawn) Langley; four great grandchildren, Marley Briles; Nick Langley; Brenna Langley and Ryan Langley; and several nieces and nephews. John's niece, Millie Briles, cared for John during his extended illness.

Mrs. Varner was born in Davidson County January 1, 1934 to Clement Wilson Lanier and Odetta Kindley Lanier. She was married to C Tyler Varner who died May 26, 2021. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Ty Varner and by sisters Kathleen Bisher and Laverna Cummings.

She is survived by her son, Todd Varner and wife Leslie of Denton; grandsons Will Varner and Ty Varner and financee Helen Jenkins; great grandchild, Sutton Rae Varner; and a sister Dot Landrum.

Dr. John Gilbert Roland, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021. 
A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday August 4, 2021 at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with Dr. Gary Chapman officiating. 

He was born on June 14, 1930, in Winston-Salem to William Reuben and Nellie Briles Roland.  He married Louise Strupe on September 7, 1950. Dr. Roland served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. 

Dr. Roland was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Strupe Roland; two sons, John G. Roland, Jr. (Janie), and David Strupe Roland (Apryl); two grandchildren, John Joseph Roland (Christina) and Anna Louise Roland; and four great-grandchildren, John Joseph II, Barrett Daniel, Walker Earl and Dakota Joseph.

Asheboro- Jerry C Peacock, 77, died suddenly Thursday, July 22, 2021, of a heart attack at his home. Born February 20, 1944 in Asheboro, he was the son of the late Jones Peacock, and Leona Miller Peacock.

Mrs. Velna Summey Rider, age 90 of Old US Hwy # 64, Lexington, NC died Monday, July 19 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 23 at Cid United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Treece and Rev. Doug Rowe. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Mrs. Rider was born in Randolph County on December 9, 1930 to Jesse Summey and Gertrude Briles Summey. She was married to Aster R Rider, Sr. who died July 29, 2019. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by a grandson, Jon Rider, a brother Aster Summey and by sisters, Frances Leonard, Rachael Jones, Eva Hill and Magdalene Myers.

She is survived by a son, Aster R (Sonny) Rider, Jr. of Lexington and by a daughter Ronda R Holmes and husband Paul of Trinity and by grandchildren Kara Lewis and Harrison Rider.

Mrs. Carolyn Faye Duncan Washam, 79, a resident of Thomasville, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at the Henry Etta & Bruce Hinkle Hospice House. She was born on July 5, 1941 in Guilford County, NC to Clinton Harding Duncan and Doris Hepler Duncan. 

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. C. Alan Greene officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Surviving are her son, Steven Clay Gallimore and wife Lorrie of Thomasville; her step-son, Bobby Van Hedrick and wife Carol of Thomasville; her step-daughter, Karen Sue LeClerc and husband Dave of Myrtle Beach, SC; her grandchildren, Brittany Gallimore New and husband Sean, Brandy Gallimore Edwards and husband Jayson, Ryan Gallimore and fiancée Alexandria, Megan Gallimore Hurt and husband Chris, and Katrina Short; her step-grandchildren, Rusty Hedrick and wife Kimberly, Daniel Hedrick and wife Kimberly, and Angie Smith and husband Kevin; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and her brother, Thomas C. Duncan and friend Betty Rose of Thomasville.

Mark Lyle Briles Passes Away

Mark Lyle Briles, of Evart, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 10, 2021, surrounded by family. He was born on December 31, 1956.

"Fishing in Memory" will be held on Saturday, June 19,2021 at 1 p.m. at Rose Lake (Osceola County Park) located at 17726 Youth Dr, Leroy Mi 49655. 

Mark's death was preceded by; his parents, Wayne and Theresa (Carter) Briles; brothers, Wayne Briles and Kenneth Briles; sister; Margaret "Peggy" Briles; as well as one grandchild.

Mark was survived by; the children of  his heart; Tina (Mike) Bessey, Joseph Briles, Amy Briles, Ben Dixon-Briles, Wayne Briles, and Vera Briles; siblings, Dale (Alice Carrier) Briles, Hazen (Diana) Briles, Edith Briles, Shelly Briles, Katie Clements, and Irene Briles; along with many grandchildren of his heart and one great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews as well as many greats; and lots of other loving family members and friends.
