Josephine Van Scoyk Briles Dies


Josephine Briles passed away peacefully on May 6, 2021 at St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, Burlington, Kansas from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., May
18, 2021, followed by a graveside service at the Crandall, Kansas Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. 

Mrs. Briles was born on February 10, 1932 in LeRoy, Kansas to Vivian (Hunt) and Lewis Guy Van Scoyk. On June 18, 1950, Josephine married John F. Briles at the Crandall United Brethren Church.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Guy Van Scoyk, Vivian and Bob Helmer; husband, Rev. John F. Briles Sr.; grandson, Matthew Briles. 

She is survived by her children, John F. Briles Jr., Noah (Fonda) Briles, JoAnn Briles-Klein, and Lois (Mike Peters) Briles; grandchildren, Laura (Dan Luckey) Klein, Jonathan (Melissa) Briles, and one great- granddaughter, Arya. She is also survived by her only brother, Robert (Alida) Helmer; sisters-in-law, Mildred Briles and Virginia Mitchell.

Matthew Ryan Briles

Matthew Ryan Briles, 29, passed away April 10, 2016. A visitation will be held Friday, April 15th from 2-4PM with a memorial service at 4PM at Rainbow Mennonite Church. Born October 15, 1986 to Noah and Fonda (Crittenden) Briles. Preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Briles and Bobbie C. Crittenden; and uncles, Bobby, Theodore, and Lance Crittenden. Surviving are his parents, Noah and Fonda Briles of KCK; brother, Jonathon Briles of KCMO; grandmothers, Josephine Briles of Visalia, CA and Florence Moots of Minden, NE; aunts and uncles, Laurie & Vaughn Cook of Minden, NE, John Briles of Emporia, KS, JoAnn Briles-Klein of Wichita, KS and Lois (Mike Peters) Briles of KCMO, Joe and Debbie Hoag of Yates Center, KS, Sandy Donner of Plainview, NE, as well as a number of other great aunts and cousins.
