Marie Small Freeman, 94, of Randleman passed away at home on February 28, 2024.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 600 S, Main St, Randleman. Funeral Services will be Monday, March 4, 2024 at 2 pm in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jerry Mills, Reverend Jimmy Shirlen, and Reverend Jeff Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park.

A native of Randolph County, raised in the Jackson Creek community, born to Reamy H & Eunice Pierce Small.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Talmadge Freeman; sisters, Ester Davidson, Ocia McDowell, Kate Skeen, Annie Mae Robbins, Kathleen Yow; brothers, Clay Small, Lloyd Small, Lindsay Small, and Hoyle Small.

She is survived by her son Jeff (Angie) Freeman and daughter, Cynthia (Richard) Ivey of Randleman. Grandchildren, Kim (Cash) Bowman of Climax. Wendy (Jeremy) Maness, Courtney (Brandon) McLeod & Jordan Freeman and Emma Motsinger of Randleman. Great grandchildren, Tyler Bowman, Jacob Bowman, Harrison Maness, Luke Maness, Levi Maness, and Cayla (DJ) Laxton. Sister, Alene Gallimore of Lexington, NC; brother, Everett “Buck” (Evelean) Small of Asheboro, NC.

Ruby Elizabeth McDowell Bristow

Ruby Elizabeth McDowell Bristow, 78, of Asheboro, died Saturday, September 5, 2020, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

A memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2020, at Pleasant Union Community Church, Denton, with Rev. Garry Reeder and Rev. Jeff Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. 

Born in Randolph County, NC, on October 18, 1941, Ruby was the daughter of the late Arthur Exton McDowell and Ocia Edna Small McDowell. 

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her siblings, Fred McDowell, Virgie McElreath, Maggie Hill, Glen McDowell, Edna Nelson, Minnie Cranford and Toby McDowell. 

Surviving are her daughter, Kathy Cashatt and husband Bill of High Point; son, Malcolm Bristow of High Point; sisters, Ora Clark of Asheboro, Louise Lambeth of Thomasville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gilbert Lane

Gilbert Lane, 88, of Asheboro, passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at his home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born on November 15, 1931, in Randolph Co., to the late Cecil Monroe Lane and Treva Mae Skeen Lane. He served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan. 

In addition to his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by his brother, John Thomas Lane; and niece, Mirenda Lane.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Barbee Lane of the home; daughter, Karen Lane Robinson and husband Thomas of Huntersville, NC; son, Charles Kevin Lane and wife Jessica of Dallas, TX; sister, Peggy Lane Masteller of Raleigh, NC; brother, Joseph Millis Lane and wife Nancy of Daniel Island, SC; grandchildren, Cecilia Robinson, Ian Robinson, Taylor Robinson, Corbin Lane, Sarah Lane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Annie Mae Small Robbins, age 94, of Asheboro died Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro. Mrs. Robbins' body will lie in state at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro on Saturday, April 18, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 pm. A private service will be held.

Born April 4, 1926 to Ream Harrison and Eunice Pierce Small of the Tabernacle community. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bowden Robbins, son, Larry Robbins, son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Vanessa Robbins, great granddaughter, Morgan Grant, son-in-law, W.C. Linthicum, brothers and sisters, Lloyd, Lindsay, Clay, and Hoyle Small, Ester Davidson, Kathleen Yow, Ocia McDowell, and Kate Skeen.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Charlie) Foster of Denton and Janice Linthicum of Randleman; son, Kenny (Sheila) Robbins of Asheboro; daughter-in-law, Kinza Robbins of Robbins; grandchildren, Trevor (Kristie) Foster of Denton, Annette (Kevin) Bouchard of Athol, Mass, Jason (Jamie) Robbins of Asheboro, Amanda (Jonathan) Hamilton of Asheboro, Sharon (Jesse) Sharpe of Asheboro, Lisa (Michael) Stanley of Lexington, Christian Clark of Randleman, Jonathan (Felicia) Linthicum of Sophia, Kim (Ashley) Robbins of Robbins, Chad Robbins and Helen of Denton, Brian Robbins and LaShawn of Seagrove, and Heather Grant and Noah of Asheboro; 18 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Alene Gallimore of Lexington and Marie Freeman of Randleman; and brother, Everette (Buck) Small of Asheboro.

Kenneth Cecil Small Dies

Kenneth Cecil Small, 71, of Asheboro, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at Clapps Convalescent Home. Due to restrictions on group gatherings, services will be private at Ridge Funeral Home on Saturday, April 18, 2020, with Rev. Jeff Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Born May 16, 1948, in Randolph Co., the son of the late Joe Lloyd Small and Gertrude Irene Snider Small. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ken Small and brother-in-law, Craig Branson.

Cecil is survived by his sister, Brenda Branson; nephew, Shane Spoon; and granddaughter, Brittany S. Sawyer.

Joel Rai Copple, 66, Dies

Mr. Joel Rai Copple, 66 a resident of Thomasville passed away on November 14, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 23, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the J C Green and Sons Chapel in Thomasville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Born in Guilford County on September 21, 1953 a son to the late Joe Ross Copple and Colleen Gibson Copple. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Betsye Downing Copple of the home; daughters, Christina Nichole Copple and her husband Andrew Crawford of Golden, Colorado and Kathryn Rae Copple and fiancé Matthew McKinley Cox of High Point; sister, Marjy Copple Lambeth and husband Ray Lambeth of Winston Salem; granddaughter, Adelaide Gale Crawford and special grand pup, Luna Copple Cox.

John Gilbert Skeen, age 59, of Denton passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2019. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Gravel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Denton with Rev. Scott Hardy officiating. 

Mr. Skeen was born in Randolph County on December 1, 1959 to John Robert and Colette Freeman Skeen, who preceded in him in death. 

He is survived by his sister, Teresa S. Bobbitt and husband Marvin of Durham; nephew, Marvin Bobbitt IV; and several aunts, cousins, and friends.

Minnie Leigh McDowell Cranford, 71, of Asheboro, died Monday, March 11, 2019, at Woodland Hill Center in Asheboro. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2019, and other times at the home of her daughter, Tammy Nixon.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2019, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro, with Rev. Doris Marie Small Whitaker, 82, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at High Point Medical Center in High Point. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Destination Heaven, 1796 Old County Farm Road, Sophia, NC, 27350, with Pastor Benny Smith officiating. Burial will follow at West Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Born July 17, 1936, in Randolph Co., NC, Mrs. Whitaker was the daughter of the late Lindsay and Lizzie Tysinger Small. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Thurman Whitaker. Mrs. Whitaker is survived by her sons, Tony Whitaker and Terry Whitaker, both of Asheboro; sisters, Thelma Harris, Ruth Wilson, Edith "Cookie" Cutshaw, all of Asheboro; brother, Buck Small of Asheboro; grandchildren, T.J. Austin John Pierce Dies

Austin John Pierce, 90, died Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the Hospice Home at High Point. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 2:30 pm at Rich Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Miller and Rev. Michael Bowers officiating. Interment with military rites provided by the Military Burial Honor Guard will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Due to the recent passing of his wife, Beatrice no formal visitation will be held and the family will be at the home of his daughter, Diane. Mr. Pierce will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Born on January 15, 1926 in Randolph County, NC to Gurney Branson Pierce and Nettie Hill Pierce. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Beatrice Small Pierce on August 15, 2016, whom he married on July 13, 1946; and his brother, Raymond Pierce.
