Jim Briles, Officer of the Year in Asheboro!
ASHEBORO-Asheboro Police Detective James Rex "Jim" Briles has been selected as the 2013 Asheboro Police Officer of the Year. Briles has been a member of APD since 1999 serving in patrol, Criminal Investigations, Vice/Narcotics and again in CID/CSI. He is son of James Rex and Catherine Cameron Briles. Det. Briles is a license pilot and enjoys riding his motorcycle. He is also the brother of R. Trent Briles, Curator of the Briles Information Network. Congrats big brother on your award!
John Max Small, Son of Briles Dies
John Max Small, 80, of Asheboro, NC, died Thursday, December 26, 2013, at The Randolph Hospice House. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Hunt and Rev. Mack Summey officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home. Native of Randolph County, NC, born December 4, 1933.the son of the late William Clay Small and Blanche Lenora Briles Small. In addition to his parents, Mr. Small was preceded in death by his sister, Vae Robbins. Survived by his wife, Edith Swaney Small, of the home; sons, Michael Small and wife, Brenda, of Farmer, NC, Dean Small and wife, Jacky, of Asheboro, NC; sisters, Maxine Thompson, Eutha McPherson and husband, Ed, all of Asheboro, NC; brother, Jerry Small and wife, Eula, of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Nicole Ewing, Kelly Hughes and husband, Richie, Amber Small, Shane Small, Nathan Small, Mandy Small; step-grandchildren, Samantha Ritter, Jacob Ritter; great grandchildren, Milea Canoy, Cameron Canoy, Hayden Hughes.

Tabor Community Church, Asheboro; Rev. Ben Stowe, Rev. Stephen Stowe, Rev. Gene Beaver. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Visitation, 10 AM to 11 AM, Thursday, Mt. Tabor Community Church, AsheboroNative of Randolph County, preceded in death by his wife, Lela Nelson Baker, parents John A.Baker, Sr. and Lura Robbins Baker. Survivors: daughters, Jean Baker Antrim and husband, Carl, of Trinity, Elaine Baker Beaver and husband, Gene, of Salisbury, Joy Gayle Baker Mitchem, of Trinity, sons, Charles Edward Baker and wife, Bonnie, John Alec Baker, III and wife, Netta, all of Trinity, thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild.

Glendon Bascom McCain, 73, of Randleman, NC, passed Friday, December 20, 2013, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am Monday, December 23, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray Whittington officiating. Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Sunday, December 22, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro. Burial will follow at Charlotte United Methodist Church Cemetery in Asheboro. Native of Randolph County, NC, born April 19, 1940 the son of the late Harris Glenn McCain and Fleta Briles McCain Redding. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob McCain and Bill McCain. Survived by daughter, Robin Vanhoy, of Asheboro; sons, Todd McCain, of Greensboro, Eric McCain, of Asheboro, Chris Davis and wife, Sheryl, of Greensboro: grandsons, Ryan Vanhoy, of Oxford, MS, Brad Davis and wife, Jenn, of Charlotte; and two great grandchildren.

Mary Ann Elizabeth Schweitzer Briles
Mary Ann Elizabeth Schweitzer Briles, age 88, passed December 18, 2013 at the Christian Community Nursing Home in Hudson, Wisconsin. Funeral Mass 12pm (noon) Saturday, 12/21/13 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, River Falls. Visitation 10:30am until time of Mass at the church. Interment in St. Bridget Catholic Cemetery. Born May 13, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, to Henry and Eva (Walker) Schweitzer, Sr. the first of three children. She was married to the late Donald O. Briles on April 30, 1955. Survived by her daughters: Theresa “Terri” Briles of Shoreview, MN, Phyllis Briles (husband Keith Lammers) of Le Sueur, MN; grandchildren, Michael Aaron (Jennifer) Briles of Chicago, Melissa Briles of Oregon, WI, Joshua Briles of Baldwin, WI, great-grandson Oliver Edward Briles. She is also survived by her brother Michael (Lori) Schweitzer of Lakeville, MN; sister-in-law Delores Briles; many nieces and nephews and faithful friends, especially Joanie & David Soward. Preceded in death by her parents, her brother Hank, her son Michael Edward, her husband Donald and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and a nephew.

Bonnie was a major contributor to our network providing valuable genealogy information and aided in important research for the Briles and Snider surnames. Bonnie Kay Snider Jones, 69, a resident of Duke St., died Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Rusty Sieck officiating. Interment will follow at the Snider Family Cemetery in Churchland, NC. Born on May 28, 1944 in Davidson County, NC to Virginia Briles Snider and the late Jesse Gray Snider. She was a bookkeeper for over 50 years and former vice president of the Davidson County Genealogical Society. On June 18, 1966, she married Jeremy Copeland (Jerry) Jones, who survives of the home; also surviving are two sons, Ben C. Jones of Lexington and James G. Jones of Thomasville; her mother, Virginia Briles Snider of Thomasville; daughter-in-law, Julie Jones of Winston-Salem; and twin granddaughters, Megan and Melissa Jones of Winston-Salem.

Max "Mick" S. Briles, 83, of Salem, Oregon passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 in Arizona. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon. Born on April 2, 1930 in Shelburn, Oregon to Dewey Briles and Bertha Leimkuhl. Survived by his wife of 57 years Winnie, his daughter Debi Owen and her husband Kim, sons David (Kathy Toney), and Dan, grandchildren, Lacie, Kyle, Kevin, Brittany, Bethany, Amie, Beau, Tina, and 7 great grandchildren.

Coach Art Briles & Baylor Win Big 12 Title
What a Season for Coach Art Briles & the Baylor Bears. 11-1 and now Big 12 Champs after convincing 30-10 win over the Texas Longhorns. Baylor fans were on pins and needles after Oklahoma St lost the bedlam game to Oklahoma. Baylor needed this victory to take the title and clinch a BCS bowl! Baylor is now Fiesta Bowl bound on New Year's Day in Glendale, AZ and will likely play the University of Central Florida! Good luck to Coach Briles and the Baylor Bears in the bowl game !!!

Lena Cordelia Thyfault Briles
Lena Cordelia Thyfault Briles of Pritchett Colorado died in her home November 26, 2013. Born to Arthur and Jessie Thyfault on October 31, 1934 in Pritchett, Colorado. Lena leaves behind her loving husband, Elmer A. Briles, her son Arthur E. Briles and daughter-in-law Lonnie F. Briles, her grandson Geoffrey A. Briles, her sister Loretta Bradburn and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
