Kudos To Jeff Thigpen...Again

Here we go again! We have another privacy activist trying to shut down access to public records, and yes it’s the Guilford County Register of Deeds again. An article, which ran in the Greensboro News & Record and Rhino Times this past week, questions the privacy and security of the files at the ROD. The articles were based on comments made by so-called Internet Expert Linda Criddle at a county commissioner’s meeting.

Criddle comments during the meeting include some “inconsistencies”, which were addressed by Thigpen on his BLOG. As many of you know, I have questioned Jeff in the past regarding access to public records, both in-house and online, and he has addressed these issues promptly. I, myself, am one of 700 actual registered users who followed the verification requirements to access online records. I have used the Guilford County ROD online access on several occasions and find it useful for research and development. Birth & Death certificates are public record and access to these records SHOULD REMAIN PUBLIC. Until the State changes it’s laws, vitals records will remain public. Criddle needs to understand the role of the Register of Deeds and the role it plays based on State Statute.

I’m not going to write a long, exhausting article to reverberate Jeff’s response to Criddle’s opinion on this topic. I will not repeat my feeling on this topic or re-post my article from last year. I will refer you to his direct and positive response on his BLOG, which will explain his actions based on NC General Statute. The BIN totally supports Jeff Thigpen and his office and thanks him for allowing researchers and verified users to access public information.

2 arrested in connection with arson of garage

Article and photo by Curt Slyder of the Journal & Courier Online Their web site allows sharing of news articles published by their reporters. Permission has been granted to the BIN for posting of this article. Article Courtesy of Journal & Courier.

LAFAYETTE,IN-Two juveniles have been arrested, accused of setting fire to a northside Lafayette garage early Friday. According to Lafayette police, the juveniles could possibly be linked to other crimes as well.

Lafayette firefighters were called to a house at 2126 Underwood St. around 4 a.m. They arrived to find the detached garage in flames, said Lafayette Fire Department inspector Dave Thomas.

Raymond Briles, who lives in the house with his fiancée, Sheryl Hindsley, said he thinks the fire was started over a mo-ped that had been stolen from the garage days before. He got the mo-ped back after an on-street confrontation Tuesday with someone he noticed riding it.

"They were mad because I took it back from them," Briles said.

The fire destroyed the garage, as well as a mo-ped, a pickup and other items inside, Thomas said.

No one was injured, Thomas said, adding that the family has insurance.

Two juveniles were arrested later Friday morning on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire, Thomas said.

According to Lafayette Police Capt. Bruce Biggs, three juveniles were brought in for questioning regarding several mo-ped thefts.

The investigation led to all three being arrested on suspicion of theft, and two of them on suspicion of arson.

In addition to the arson, the trio might be linked to as many as 15 other crimes, including thefts, vandalism and one burglary, Biggs said.

Biggs could not release their names because they are under age.

All three were being held Friday in juvenile detention outside the county, Biggs said. The information will be sent to the prosecutor's office.

Briles said his mo-ped was stolen from the garage Monday night. After Tuesday's confrontation, he got it back, putting it in the garage.

A neighbor knocked on their door early Friday, alerting them to the fire. "I went out there and there was nothing but 30-foot flames," Briles said.

Briles said he's glad police caught the juveniles believed to be responsible. "I hope they prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law," Briles said. "Setting garages on fire endangers people's lives."

Famous Church Changes Name

While tracking around Randolph County this past Thursday, I discovered the church my great-grandfather help build has changed names. Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church (Originally Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church) off Hoover Hill Rd is now Mt. Pleasant Community Church. No one was at the church on Thursday and all of the telephone numbers for the church have been disconnected. We are unsure if the church lost it's affiliation with the Methodist faith or if the church is no longer active. Several Briles are buried at the church cemetery: Joseph Lafayette & Roxanna Spencer Briles, John Hill and Amanda Lambeth Briles, Troy Alfred Briles, Worth Briles and Mary J. Briles (my direct line). I hope to contact the church later next week and determine the status of the church.

BIN Info To Remain on Rootsweb

The BIN has made a decision regarding our information on Rootsweb.com. After careful review of the situation and weighing our options, we have decided to continue to post our genealogy information on Rootsweb.

"The Generations Network" owns Rootsweb.com and has transplanted RW with Ancestry.com, a paid service. TGN is the parent company of both networks and as many of you know, Rootsweb has been free for many years. Tim Sullivan, CEO of TGN, stated the only reason behind the move is that users of each of the two main websites will be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. "Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa," Sullivan insists. TGN also announced earlier that banners would be placed on Rootsweb and that information on the site would become property of TGN. The Briles Information Network places it's GEDCOM on Rootsweb so people will have access to our genealogy information. There is nothing to own regarding vital facts and family history, only the way you present it and in a specific format you create your files. Sullivan also stated that access to Rootsweb will always be free!

We believe genealogical information and family history should be free and open to everyone. Rootsweb has been free for years and until TGN requires a fee for viewing our files, we feel the massive visitors to Rootsweb outweighs the banners. If, in the near future,TGN requires paid membership or a fee to access genealogical information on Rootsweb, we will revisit this issue and remove our files from their server.

Rootsweb.com to Merge

The BIN has received word from "The Generations Network" that Rootsweb.com will be transplanted with Ancestry.com, a paid service. TGN is the parent company of both networks and as many of you know, Rootsweb has been free for many years. The move will take place next week which incorporate the Rootsweb domain behind the Ancestry domain (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/)

Tim Sullivan, CEO of TGN, states there is only one reason behind the move. "We believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if the have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa." Sullivan insists that Rootsweb will continue to be free however we believe otherwise.

TGN also announced earlier that banners would be placed on Rootsweb and that information on the site would become property of TGN. The Briles Information Network places it's GEDCOM on Rootsweb so people have access to our genealogy information. But this info is our information and TGN should not have rights to it.

At this time, The BIN is debating on whether to continue relationship between network and TGN/Rootsweb.com. The BIN does have two other databases on our server so this loss will be minimal. The BIN will make an announcement regarding this breaking news in short time.

Briles is New County Coordinator for Randolph

I've made formal contact with the head of the North Carolina Gen Web Project expressing interest in returning as the County Coordinator of the Randolph County Gen Web Project. As many of you know, I was CC for Randolph for two years and enjoyed heading that project. Other interests lead me away from the project and I left the project in good hands with Nola Duffy.

I received an email from Mrs. Duffy who was willing to relinquish the role back to me, however no word yet from Denise Woodside, the head of the project for NC. The site has not been updated in sometime and I look forward to assisting in updating the project once again.

As of today, I've been appointed to the above position and have revamped the web site. Please take the time and look at the NEW and IMPROVED Randolph County Gen Web Project!
